ASIA/CHINA - Flourishing Catholic community in the province of Yunan with the highest number of different ethnic groups

Thursday, 12 May 2005

Beijing (Fides Service) - In the south western mainland China province of Yunan, which has borders with Myanmar, Vietnam and Laos, people of 52 different ethnic groups make up 33.4% of the population. The Catholic Church is flourishing here with vocations to the priesthood as it can be seen by the number of seminarians at the local seminary.
Missionary sisters from Hong Kong and Macao work here in social work and health care, caring for people with leprosy in particular. After years of difficulties for evangelisation today in the diocese of Dali alone the Church is reaping abundant spiritual fruits: there are 50,000 Catholics, about 30 churches, whereas in 1957 there were about 5,000 Catholics. Dali diocese has its own web site to keep in contact with the universal Church and spread news locally on Church news
Catholics here are not rich in money but they are rich in faith which they share and live in poverty and in contact with nature and is more authentic and convincing. (Agenzia Fides 12/05/2005 Righe: 14 Parole: 130)
