ASIA/HONG KONG - Mother’s Day an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of life from the Christian point of view

Saturday, 7 May 2005

Hong Kong (Fides Service) - Although I lost my child “I am certain that the Heavenly Father will take care of him” said Mrs Liang, a member of St. Buonaventura’s parish in Hong Kong. For this mother Mother’s Day on 8 May takes on special significance. According to the Hong Kong diocesan bulletin Kong Ko Bao, when she was only 16 weeks pregnant Mrs Liang was told that her baby would not live more than 12 months. However she and her husband decided to go ahead and have the child. The child was born, his parents had him baptised and not long afterwards on 19 March this year, the feast of St Joseph accompanied him to the home of the Heavenly Father. On the eve of Mother’s Day, Mrs Liang said: “I ask all mothers to see life as a precious gift. It is sad to think there are people who have no respect for life”. Mrs Liang still mourns her baby but she is at peace with herself and with God: “Our cross is never as heavy as we imagine because the Lord helps us to carry it”.
