Monday, 25 April 2005

Bunia (Fides Service)- A firm call to accelerate the process of disarmament and demobilisation of militia in Ituri, north east Democratic Congo was been launched to the government and the international community by Justice-Plus, civil society organisation in Bunia, main town in the region. According to DIA news agency the human rights organisation formulated a series of recommendations in a statement entitled “Cycle of Violence in Ituri: the policy of laxity and waiting sacrifices human lives”.
Justice-plus calls on the Congolese authorities to give the judiciary the means necessary to investigate crimes against civilians and to bring the perpetrators and those behind them to justice. The NGO says trials must be organised as soon as possible at the military court in Bunia, so victims and witnesses can take part in the hearings.
It calls on the judiciary of Congo to investigate crimes against civilians since December 2004 in Djugu and Aru, to identify the criminals and take them to court. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 25/4/2005 righe 22 parole 239)
