New Delhi (Fides Service) - India’s 16 million Catholics are rejoicing for the election of Pope Benedict XVI whom they assure of their loyalty, devotion and obedience, the All India Catholic Union which represents Catholic lay associations and organisations in all 120 diocese all over the country said in a statement with regard to the election. Recalling that the new Pope was a great friend of Pope John Paul II, the Union said he is an enunciator of the same lines of thought as his predecessor, especially with regard to the Church in Asia. “He is a valid successor who will guarantee continuity for the wellbeing and growth of the Church, for world peace and for human dignity. Like his predecessor, Benedict XVI experienced the horror of war during World War II. Today we see him as a pillar of peace, a strong defender of human rights and freedom of conscience”. The All India Catholic Union is confident that the new Pope will be an advocate in front of this globalised world for the needs of the poor: “He will also work for the rebirth of the Church all over the world, especially in Europe”.
