Manila (Fides Service) - Cardinal Jaime Sin, emeritus Archbishop of Manila, unable to attend the conclave for health reasons gave a statement to Fides, through his spokesman: “Benedict XVI is a brilliant and good man who belongs to the same tradition as John Paul II ”.
The Bishops of the Philippines expressed their congratulations to the new Pope assuring him of their prayers, loyalty and support. Bishop Ramon Arguelles of Lipa said of Pope Ratzinger “he is a good choice. We pray God to give him the strength to witness and to guide the Church vibrant with the Holy Spirit”. The president of this largely Catholic nation, Gloria Arroyo, expressed her congratulations and said about Pope Benedict XVI “he will help unite not only Catholics but all who believe in peace, brotherhood and harmony”.
