Rome (Fides Service) - An International Symposium on the theme University and Church in Europe is to take place in Rome from 17-20 July 2003, organised by the Council of European Bishops’ Conferences (CCEE) and the Italian Bishops’ Commission for Education, School and University. The Symposium is taking place within the framework of the celebrations for the 700th anniversary of the foundation of Rome’s “La Sapienza” University, one of the highlights of which was the awarding of a doctorate “Honoris Causa” in Law to John Paul II. 1,200 delegates (professors, students and chaplains) will take part in the Symposium, coming from state, private and pontifical universities from 40 European countries. They will be led by about 50 Rectors and 30 Bishops from dioceses with universities. The Symposium is hosted by the Pontifical Lateran University.
On Thursday 17 July at 1500. There will be addresses from the Rector of La Sapienza University, Professor Giuseppe D’Ascenzo, from the FUCE President Professor Miguel Mata Gassiot, from the Vicegerent of Rome and CCEE Episcopal delegate for university pastoral care Mgr. Cesare Nosiglia, from the Italian Bishops’ Conference Secretary Bishop Giuseppe Betori, and from the Italian Minister for Schools and Universities, Letizia Moratti. The start of work has been entrusted to the Bishop of Chur and CCEE President Amedée Grab; the introductory lecture on “University and Church in Europe: in dialogue for a new civilisation” is from Cardinal Karl Lehmann, President of the German Bishops’ Conference.
Friday 18 July will be the “European Day of Culture”. Scheduled in the programme is a meeting of rectors of European universities On Saturday 19 July, at 0930, the Symposium will move to Castel Gandolfo for an audience with the Pope and some cultural and recreational time at the Centro Mariapoli The Symposium ends on Sunday 20 July with the celebration of Mass in the Basilica of St John Lateran.
