AFRICA/TOGO - As elections approach the situation becomes incandescent: at least 7 killed in clashes between demonstrators and police on Saturday, but government says it cannot confirm that people were killed

Lome (Fides Service)- The political climate in Togo takes fire 6 days before presidential elections on Sunday 24 April. Street protests on Saturday 16 April led to fierce clashes between demonstrators and police. Representatives of the opposition say at least seven people were killed, but the government says it cannot confirm the news that there were victims.
This is a delicate moment in Togo after the death of its President Gnassingbé Eyadéma on 5 February.
The main candidate in the presidential elections is Faure Eyadéma, son of the late president, declared head of state by the army after parliament made hasty changes to the constitution dismissing its chairman who, according to law, should have become interim president. International pressure forced Faure Eyadéma to call elections and resign.
