Hong Kong (Fides Service) - Young people of Hong Kong are deeply grateful to John Paul II and his tender affection. Living in a highly developed technical society Hong Kong’s youth might seem apparently to be indifferent and not easily moved. But John Paul II spoke to their hearts stirring enthusiasm and energy. They say they will never forget the Pope’s last words addressed to young people when he was told of the thousands of youngsters gathered in St Peter’s Square to pray and be close to him as he lay dying “I came in search of you, now you have come to me and I thank you”.
According to diocesan bulletin Kong Ko Bao, Hong Kong’s young Catholics commemorated the Pope with prayer meetings, attending Mass and reciting the Rosary. Fr. Chan Tak Hung Philip, in charge of youth pastoral, said he too will treasure the Pope’s last words “This was yet another demonstration of his love ” the priest said.
“World Youth Days invented by John Paul II gave new impulse to youth pastoral in Hong Kong. Among the countless fruits of these days, richer faith life of our young people and flourishing new pastoral initiatives”, he added. A young man in his twenty’s who took part in World Youth Days in 1997 in Paris and in 2000 in Rome said: “The Pope reached out to all people, irrespective of ethnic origin or nationality, but he showed special love for the young and the most helpless. His death filled me with sadness”.
The new generations of Hong Kong have a wish and a prayer: “We pray the new Pope will continue along the path traced by John Paul II”. (Agenzia Fides 13/04/2005 Righe: 26 Parole: 271)
