Rome (Fides Service) - In collaboration with the department for Disability and Rehabilitation of the World Health Organisation WHO the Italian association Amici di Raoul Follereau AIFO organised an international meeting in Rome to discuss the role of persons with a disability in rehabilitation and integration.
The meeting was the first stage of a programme which intends to involve many countries. The programme is based on the research-action method to enable persons with a disability to have more say with regard to decisions concerning their life.
WHO launched the programme as a result of a study which revealed that health services meet the needs of people acute conditions, but not those in chronic conditions. This tendency is due to the fact that medical doctors are considered experts, whereas persons with a disability are seen as passive users of services.
Over the past 12 months AIFO was in Tanzania to investigate the possibility of promoting new policies in this sense. So far 35 programmes in 23 different countries have shown interest in the initiative. (AP) (11/4/2005 Agenzia Fides; Righe:21; Parole:227)
