ASIA/IRAQ - Shiite leader Al Sistani sends message of condolence to the Holy See for the death of Pope John Paul II

Baghdad (Fides Service)- Iraqi Shiite leader Ayatollah Ali Al Sistani sent messages of condolence for the death of Pope John Paul II to Cardinal Angelo Sodano and the Papal Nuncio in Iraq in which he said: “I wish to express to all Catholics my condolences for the death of the Pope who bore a message of peace and promoted interreligious dialogue. He was a Pope who showed great respect for all religions”.
Iraq was represented at the Pope’s funeral by foreign minister Mrs Pascal Warda who was accompanied by the Iraqi ambassador to the Holy See Albert Elda and Mgr. Philip Najim, representing the Patriarch of the Chaldean Catholics in Rome. (A.E.) (Agenzia Fides 8/4/2005 righe 15 parole 144)
