AFRICA/ZIMBABWE - Serious irregularities took place during the March 31 vote: the Opposition accuses the government of fraud

Thursday, 7 April 2005

Harare (Fides Service)- “Accusations of fraud were almost to be expected since President Mugabe’s government had complete control of the electoral campaign” said local sources in Harare, Zimbabwe where March 31 elections were won by the Party of the President, Robert Mugabe.
According to the Opposition both the electoral campaign and the vote were marked by fraud and irregularities. The completely controlled government media gave no space to Opposition parties. And the situation of serious food shortage created conditions for episodes of food in exchange for votes. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 7/4/2005 righe 12 parole 120)
