Monday, 4 April 2005

Beirut (Fides Service) - “People on the streets in Beirut stop to exchange condolences for the death of Pope John Paul II, Christians and Muslims alike, even strangers. We all feel like one family which has lost a very dear Father”, said Rev.Hani Abd Al ahdd, at the Catholic Bishops’ House in Beirut.
“Catholics followed the news of the Pope’s condition and heard the announcement of his death with deep sorrow. For Catholics in Lebanon the Pope was a symbol of love and peace. He loved our country and left part of his heart here when he visited us. We all remember his words, he urged us to be authentic missionaries. At a special Mass yesterday evening in Beirut besides Catholics, there were representatives of Orthodox Christian community and the Muslim and Jewish communities. At 12 noon today Catholic and Orthodox churches sounded the passing bell. People are sad but strong in hope because the Pope gave new life to Christ’s message to all humanity”.
