ASIA/PHILIPPINES - Catholic prisoners in the National Penitentiary in Manila keep vigil for the Pope with fasting, Way of the Cross, non stop prayers

Friday, 1 April 2005

Manila (Fides Service) - Catholic prisoners at the National Penitentiary in Manila fasted and took part in a Stations of the Cross liturgy to ask God to comfort the Pope at this time, the Catholic prison chaplain Rev. Robert Olaguer told Fides. “Concern for the Pope is widespread among the prisoners”, Father Olaguer said. “Over the past few days we organised special prayers, a fast and the Way of the Cross and numerous prisoners took part. Now in the prison chapel there is a non stop prayer vigil. All the inmates are deeply moved. Many have vivid memories of the Pope’s visit to the Philippines, many are crying and praying from their hearts. He is deeply loved and seen as a father. As they pay their debt to society the prisoners say: the state condemned me, but Jesus Christ has forgiven me. And in the Holy Father they see the love and forgiveness of God the Father”.
