Thursday, 10 March 2005

Brussels (Fides Service) - Many Christians in the world will be praying for Burma or Myanmar on March 13 a Global Day of Prayer for Burma promoted by Christians Concerned for Burma organistaion. They will pray for that the people of Burma may have a better future and for the end of a civil war which has lasted for 55 years. For more information see www.prayforburma.org.
The main prayer points indicated on the web site are the following: “We pray for God's light of truth and love to penetrate every part of Burma. For freedom and lasting peace for the whole of Burma. For justice and the desire within all those in leadership to work for the good of everyone they represent. For relief teams of all ethnic groups to be trained and sent to give help, hope and love to the oppressed. Please pray they will be effective in bringing relief to suffering people of Burma as well as building up understanding, reconciliation and unity between all the peoples of Burma. For friends around the world to stand up for the people of Burma. For the restoration of democracy, ethnic rights and freedom for all political prisoners”.
There are hundreds of thousands of displaced persons in Myanmar, mainly of the ethnic groups Karen, Karenni and Shan, as a result of conflict between separatists and government army. A major threat in the area is represented by anti-personnel mines placed in rebel areas by government troops.
Besides the prayer campaign, concrete assistance is given regularly by Christian Relief Teams who visit the affected areas distributing material aid and providing medical care. In the past twelve months the relief workers brought help to Karen, Karenni, Shan, Kachin. Among the Catholic organisations working among refugees from Myanmar, the Jesuit Refugees Service.
