AMERICA/ECUADOR - “The country is precipitating in a situation of illegality, confusion mistrust and fear”: concerned Catholic Bishops appeal for more democracy and justice

Monday, 7 March 2005

Quito (Fides Service) - “In our Ecuador rich in enormous potential, we note with deep concern and anxiety an accumulation of errors and irresponsibility. The country is precipitating into a dark chasm of illegality, confusion, mistrust and fear. Policies regarding the common good and the rule of law are being undermined by rancour, personal ambitions and aggressiveness”. This concerning affirmation was part of a statement issued by the Catholic Bishops of Ecuador “For a culture of legality and justice” dated 24 February 2005.
The Bishops urged the authorities to respect their freedom to proclaim the Gospel and contribute towards social harmony by promoting the social teaching of the Church. “This includes the unquestionable freedom to publicly profess one’s faith without fear of discrimination and to promote works of education, assistance and social development, as well as form pondered opinions on the changing situation in the country, with special concern for the poor, the common good and promotion of civil, social and cultural rights” they wrote.
From this point of view the Bishops called for more democracy which, they say, is only possible where there is rule of law, where rights are respected and the responsibilities of individuals, the bodies in power and society are determined. They also said, “if power, the application of the law, the administration of public resources become reasons for conflict among different groups, the entire system is contaminated and democracy collapses”. Lastly the Bishops urge the people, especially those with posts of responsibility and political leaders to realise their responsibility and adopt suitable measures to lead the country back on the path of legality, justice and peace.
