AMERICA/COLOMBIA - Pontifical Mission Societies promote Young Missionaries programme for 2006: a year of mission commitment and service in another diocese

Thursday, 24 February 2005

Bogota (Fides Service) - During their recent meeting in Bogota diocesan directors of the Pontifical Mission Societies from all over Colombia, aware of the need to encourage concrete commitment for mission among young people involved in parish activity, youth groups and youth mission groups, drafted and approved a programme for Young Missionaries plan for 2006. The programme will involve young Colombians in concrete voluntary missionary service in the nation’s local churches most in need of assistance for the pastoral care for children, young people and adults.
The programme is open to university students with a spirit of initiative and missionary zeal, ability to adapt, experience of Christian life, pastoral work with children, youth and adults and have taken part in missions or new evangelisation courses in their own dioceses. Once selected the participants will be trained and before being sent on mission will sign a commitment of voluntary mission for a year with the PMS and the local Bishop where they will serve. Formal approval of parents is also requested.
The programme will be offered to all dioceses in Colombia in need of assistance with pastoral activity. Bishops who accept the Young Missionaries are expected to integrate the young volunteers in local pastoral teams and to guarantee their spiritual guidance as well as their board and lodging for the whole year. Enrolment will start in June-July and selected candidates will be assigned to their mission in September-October. They will train from November 2005 to January 2006. They will be sent on mission during the last week in January 2006 and their mission will last from 1 February to 31 December 2006. For more information see: obrasmis@cable.net.co (R.Z.)
