Madrid (Fides Service) - During a recent meeting in Madrid the Standing Committee of the Spanish Bishops’ Conference CEE approved a proposal put forward by the Consultant Commission of the New Evangelisation Fund to grant aid for 35 pastoral programmes in various different countries for a total sum of 305,320,24 Euro. The country with the highest number of programmes to be funded (6) is Peru followed by Ecuador with 3. Whereas two programmes will be funded in each of the following countries: Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, Philippines, Angola, Israel and Central Africa. The remaining funds will be assigned for pastoral programmes in Angola, Bolivia, Ivory Coast, Chile, Haiti, Madagascar, Mozambique, Niger, Dominican Republic, Rwanda, Russia and Venezuela.
The New Evangelisation Fund was established in 1997 by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Spain to help poor Churches in Latin America, Africa, Asia and eastern Europe in need of resources for pastoral programmes, formation of pastoral workers and infrastructures necessary for evangelisation. The Fund is a means through which Catholics in Spain can help their brothers and sisters who belong to Churches in need.
During the year the Consultant Commission examines requests for subsidies, assigns the funds and presents its programme for the Bishops’ approval. The resources for the fund come from an annual contribution for the Bishops’ Conference as well as offerings from dioceses, institutes of Consecrated Life and individual Catholics. Since it was established the New Evangelisation Fund has contributed towards funding 700 programmes of evangelisation. Last year the Fund provided one million Euro for 100 programmes.
