Monterrey (Fides Service) - "Maria, we your priests want to see Jesus" is the theme of a 5th International Retreat for Priests organised by the Archdiocese of Monterrey in collaboration with Catholic Charismatic Renewal which will take place 25 to 29 July in Monterrey, at one of Mexico’s largest national congress centres Cintermex.
Rev. Roberto Rodriguez Puente, a member of the organising committee and head of communications for the event, told Fides that between 1,700 and 1,800 priests are expected to attend the Retreat. The main preacher will be Archbishop Angelo Comastri Papal Delegate for the Shrine of Loreto who preached the Spiritual Exercises to the Roman Curia in 2003 and was recently appointed Vicar Coadjutor for Vatican State. Rev. Salvatore Martínez, national co-ordinator of Charismatic Renewal Italy will also attend the Retreat.
The purpose of these retreats is to promote prayer, unity and brotherhood in an atmosphere of the Upper Room to enable the participants to have an intimate and ecclesial experience of Pentecost. The central theme is the urgency of new evangelisation and the need for every priest to be evangelised before being an evangeliser. This year the participants will meditate on the presence of Christ in the Eucharist.
During the five day event 98% of the participants will be guests of local families. This contact with families has proved a good way to encourage vocations to the priesthood said the Archbishop of Monterrey.
The closing Mass of the Retreat will coincide with the opening of another national event, the 20th National Youth Day 29 to 31 July which about 16,000 young people from Mexico and from other Latin American countries are expected to attend.
