AMERICA/ECUADOR - Minute of Mission radio ‘pill’ of missionary animation produced by Pontifical Mission Societies in Ecuador informs, forms and animates

Wednesday, 9 February 2005

Quito (Fides Service)- Minute of Mission is a ‘radio pill’ lasting 60 seconds containing a brief, accurate and incisive message on the activities of the Church with testimonials from Ecuadorian missionaries ad gentes, prayers of missionary saints, descriptions of missionary situations, missionary music, message of missionary spirituality etc.
The initiative, started in 2000, and promoted by the National Office for the Pontifical Mission Societies in Ecuador, is proving successful in Ecuador and has spread to Guatemala, Nicaragua, Chile, Argentina, El Salvador and Venezuela.
At the national level these short missionary messages are broadcast by 59 radio stations, Catholic and non denominational, all over Ecuador. One sign of the popularity of this programmes “is the fact that many non religious radios have asked to receive the programme requested by their listeners ”, Osvaldo Fierro Teran of the PMS in Ecuador, told Fides.
At first this PMS programme was recorded at the National Catholic Radio of Ecuador on audio cassettes which were then delivered to the different broadcasters. Today the National PMS Office has its own professional recording studios which record the missionary pills for every month. Every month 30 or 31 messages are recorded on CD.
