AFRICA/SOUTH AFRICA - Emeritus Bishop of De Aar in South Africa dies at the age of 92

Rome (Fides Service)- Bishop Joseph Antony De Palma SCI, emeritus of De Aar (South Africa), died on 3 February at St. Peterburg in Florida (USA). Nel 1959 he was elected 5th Superior General of the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In 1967 he resigned as superior general after being appointed Bishop of the new missionary diocese of De Aar in South Africa, where he remained until 18 November 1987, when he resigned having reached the age of retirement.
He retired to a home run by the Sacrament Fathers at Pinellas Park (Florida, United States) where he lived as a simple religious.
He was a bishop who loved the Church and the people of the diocese entrusted to his care by the Holy Father. He acted with prudence and firmness to face difficult situations. He was fully identified with his mission to announce the Gospel in season and out; he devoted himself to serving the local Church.
Bishop De Palma was born at Walton, diocese of Albany, New York, on 4 September 1913, he was ordained a priest on 20 May 1944 and made a Bishop of 13 April 1967. (Agenzia Fides 8/2/2005 righe 19 parole 213)
