ASIA/HONG KONG - In co-operation with diocesan Caritas offices in various neighbouring countries Caritas Hong Kong collects 1.2 million dollars in aid of tsunami victims

Hong Kong (Fides) - In co-operation with diocesan Caritas offices in various neighbouring countries Caritas Hong Kong is supporting several programmes in aid of tsunami victims in particular to help 50,000 homeless families in Sri Lanka, in collaboration with the Centre for Economic and social development of Caritas Sri Lanka. So far Hong Kong has collected 1.2 million dollars for emergency aid and rebuilding.
A first collection of 128,000 dollars was followed by 778,000 dollars offered in parish collections, 220,00 dollars from Catholic schools, and a little over 65,000 dollars from other Catholic associations and individual donations. There are offering boxes in every church and people are responding to the call to be generous. The Catholic Bishop of Hong Kong Joseph Zen, has asked his people to remember the unfortunate tsunami victims all through the approaching season of Lent with prayers and material offerings.
