ASIA/HONG KONG - Diocesan Justice and Peace commission seminar calls on media to giver more attention to the weaker members of society

Hong Kong (Fides Service ) - The justice and Peace commission of Hong Kong diocese recently organised a seminar for scholars, experts and members of various associations to discuss the range and type of questions highlighted by the media in 2004. The result was that the media in the former British colony give little attention to problems faced by the weaker members of society.
According to the diocesan bulletin Kong Ko Bao the president of HongKong Journalist Association Mrs Cheung Ping-Ling said media personnel showed little qualification and some, as members of economic lobbies, gave attention only to certain topics for their own interests. It was also said that the local media showed little attention for matters concerning women.
Liza Leung, former president of the Justice and Peace Commission said media operators must give more attention to the life of citizens with pluralism and strive for moral correctness in their profession. The members of the commission, according to its members, was to highlight the problem and encourage initiatives in this field by Catholics involved in the media.
