ASIA/PHILIPPINES - Catholic Missionaries and Muslim faithful work side by side in relief work: one good result of tsunami disaster

Monday, 10 January 2005

Manila (Fides Service) - The Oblate Missionaries of Mary Immaculate OMI have started a campaign to collect money for the people affected by the December 26 tsunami in south Asia among the Philippines deeply saddened by the tragedy which struck their neighbour countries. The memory of the tropical storm which claimed more than 1,500 victims in early December in the eastern part of the Island of Luzon is still vivid and keenly aware what the destructive fury of water can do, the Filipinos are showing great generosity and a natural inclination for solidarity.
In agreement with the General House in Rome, OMI missionaries in Asia and Oceania, are collecting and co-ordinating aid destined for OMI mission in the affected countries India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia e Thailand, Father Ramon Bernabe, OMI Superior provincial in the Philippines told Fides. “It is important to recall - the missionary said - that the tragedy made no distinction between race, culture, religion or nationality and so it is with relief work which focuses first and foremost on the weakest and most vulnerable, the children”.
OMI missionaries are mobilised all over the Philippines, in Manila, Kiapawan, Cotabato, Maguindanao, and in the Sulu Islands. In Cotabato, where OMI runs the prestigious Notre Dame University, besides organising collections of money the missionaries are holding special prayers and Masses for the dead and the survivors, at which many local Muslims are taking part in a spirit of solidarity, OMI informs Fides.
In Cotabato the diocesan office for Justice and Peace is working in close collaboration with parallel Muslim institutions. The nation is united. All are anxious to offer their contribution and energies in favour of families affected by the disaster: the tragedy is having positive repercussions on the level of inter-religious relations.
