Thursday, 10 September 2015

Bujumbura (Agenzia Fides) - On 8 September two rebels were killed and three soldiers wounded in an attack against a military post in Kiyenzi, in the municipality of Kanyosha in the province of Bujumbura, the capital of Burundi.
Residents of Kiyenzi have taken refuge in the parish of Buhonga, in Kamesa, and in a military post in Gisovu.
This is the second attack against a military post since the beginning of the protest for the third term of President Pierre Nkurunziza, the first large-scale attack occurred in mid-July in the province of Kayanza. According to official sources 31 rebels were killed, 170 captured, while the government recorded only six wounded among the military.
Following the political and social crisis since the re-election of Nkurunziza for the third consecutive time, (in violation of the Constitution), murders and kidnappings of opponents have increased (see Fides 25/08/2015). The last murder dates back to September 8 with the killing of a spokesman for an opposition party.
To escape the climate of violence and intimidation at least 200,000 Burundians have sought refuge in neighboring Countries. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 10/09/2015)
