Tuesday, 8 September 2015

Chimbote (Agenzia Fides) - The Bishop of the Diocese of Chimbote, in northern Peru, His Exc. Mgr. Angel Francisco Simon Piorno, spoke out against the campaign which appeared in social networks in Peru entitled "Get the thief and leave him paralyzed". Mgr. Simon Piorno said that by promoting this public campaign means promoting barbarism. "I saw how peasant patrols in Cajamarca have buried thieves alive, I must say that it is not possible to encourage this campaign, because it means approving barbarism, an act of extreme cruelty", said the Bishop.
The population is outraged by the climate of insecurity and corruption of some members of the police and judiciary, but according to the note sent to Fides by local sources, Mgr. Piorno reiterated: "the solution is not popular lynching, because we live in a society where there are institutions that should solve the serious problem of crime in Peru. I know we cannot continue to live among thieves, we must demand the judiciary not to release offenders and for the police to always do their job well".
According to data collected by Fides, the campaign which appeared on social networks in Peru, unfortunately, spread rapidly and has already caused some casualties among the young criminals who were surprised stealing. The violence of the images that circulate has enticed others to join the violence. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 08/09/2015)
