AMERICA/MEXICO - Meeting of the Bishops of Mexico and the United States on the expulsion of immigrants

Tamaulipas (Agenzia Fides) - In order to address the "painful situation" that migrants live in the attempt to cross the border with the United States, the Bishops of Mexico and the United States met last weekend in the city of Matamoros, Tamaulipas (Mexico). In a statement sent to Fides, the Bishops of Mexico inform that during this binational meeting "mass expulsions and their consequences for Mexico", the risks for migrants in their "path" towards the United States were analyzed, as well as having listened to the testimonies of some migrants.
In the visit of Pope Francis to the United States, scheduled for the end of this month, it is expected, according to press reports, that the Pope will speak out against the negative effects of immigration policies.
The Mexican Bishops who attended the meeting were: His Exc. Mgr. Ruy Rendón Leal, Bishop of Matamoros; His Exc. Mgr. Alonso Garza Trevino, Bishop of Piedras Negras; His Exc. Mgr. José Guadalupe Torres, Bishop of Ciudad Juarez; His Exc. Mgr. Guillermo Ortiz Mondragón, Bishop of Cuautitlan, and head of the Mexican Episcopal Conference for Human Mobility.
The United States was represented by: His Exc. Mgr. Gustavo Garcia-Siller, Archbishop of San Antonio, Texas; His Exc. Mgr. Daniel Flores, Bishop of Brownsville; His Exc. Mgr. Michael Sis, Bishop of San Angelo; and His Exc. Mgr. Mark Joseph Seitz, Bishop of El Paso.
The meeting was also attended by representatives of some institutions working with migrants, such as the Board of the Frontera Norte, the Institute for Migrants of Tamaulipas and the Casa del Migrante San Juan Diego. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 08/09/2015)
