AFRICA/SOUTH SUDAN - The Archbishop of Juba will inform Pope Francis on the situation in his country

Thursday, 3 September 2015

Juba (Agenzia Fides) - Mgr. Paolino Lukudu Loro, Archbishop of Juba, will inform Pope Francis on the situation in South Sudan.
Before embarking for Rome, the Archbishop, talking with the reporters of Radio Bakhita, expressed his satisfaction with the peace agreement signed by President Salva Kiir and his rival, former Vice President Riek Machar (see Fides 26, 27 and 31 August 2015) and commended the peace efforts undertaken by IGAD (Intergovernmental Authority on Development) and the international community.
Mgr. Loro also called on everyone to make an effort in implementing the agreement, and urged the southern Sudanese to accept one another by living in peace with each other.
The civil war unleashed a series of minor conflicts among ethnic groups and between farmers and herdsmen for the control of water resources (see Fides 26/08/2015). The conflict caused a serious humanitarian crisis (4.6 million people suffering food shortage, millions of refugees and internally displaced persons) in the youngest African State (South Sudan became independent from Sudan in July 2011).
