AFRICA/BURUNDI - In Bujumbura, one lives in fear: every night murders and disappearances of suspected opponents

Tuesday, 25 August 2015

Bujumbura (Agenzia Fides) - "Every night there are killings and disappearances. People live in fear", local sources from the capital Bujumbura in Burundi told Agenzia Fides, where a serious political and institutional crisis is being experienced after President Pierre Nkurunziza was reelected for a third term, in violation of the Constitution and of the Arusha peace agreements.
On August 20, Nkurunziza was sworn in, thus launching officially his new mandate. "Tonight the new government was formed and swore in this morning" say Fides sources.
The apparent normality of the day opposes the restlessness of the night, when people disappear, some do not return. "We find the bodies of missing persons here and there", the sources say.
Amnesty International has reported cases of torture against people deemed, rightly or wrongly, opponents of Nkurunziza.
"The situation is dangerous because the increase of the armed opposition towards the President is feared". (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 25/08/2015)
