AMERICA/PERU - Churches in Lima archdiocese send funds to Holy See for south east Asia victims in a campaign launched by Cardinal Cipriani

Friday, 7 January 2005

Lima (Fides Service) -Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani, Archbishop of Lima, responding to the Holy Father’s call to help people affected by the tsunami December 26, launched a campaign in aid of these stricken brothers and sisters.
The Archbishop of Lima called on Catholics in the Peruvian capital to offer prayers for the souls of the dead and for all those who suffer the consequences of this natural calamity. “May they experience the mercy of the Lord and the consolation of our fraternal charity”, he pinpointed. He also said that collections on Sunday 9 January in parishes and churches in the Peruvian capital will be destined to meet the needs of the victims of the tragedy: the funds collected will be sent to the Holy See for distribution to those in need. In this way the people of Lima, often themselves affected by the consequences of the violence of nature, wish to express their closeness and join the international chain of solidarity organised by the Church to censure that fraternal aid from all nations reaches the brothers of the nations affected by the seaquake.
