AMERICA/EL SALVADOR – Crowds of faithful gather to commemorate the birth of Blessed Oscar Romero
San Salvador (Agenzia Fides) – Crowds of faithful gather with music and flowers in the crypt of El Salvador Cathedral to mark the anniversary of the date of birth of Blessed Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero.
Oscar Arnulfo Romero was born to Santos Romero and Guadalupe de Jesus Galdámez on 15 August 1917 in Ciudad Barrios, department of San Miguel. In May this year, on the 23, during a special Mass celebrated in the capital of El Salvador, Archbishop Romero was officially declared Blessed in the presence of thousands of Catholics from all over America and from the rest of the world.
In his homily at that Mass Cardinal Angelo Amato, Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, recalled that Bishop Romero’s option for the poor was not “ideological, it was evangelical. His charity reached even his persecutors to whom he preached conversion to goodness, assuring them of forgiveness, despite everything ”. Archbishop Romero did not let himself be discouraged by threats of death, or even by daily criticism, instead he continued on his path without rancour and this is why, the Cardinal continued, he is “a symbol not of division but of peace, harmony, brotherhood. Let us thank the Lord for this faithful servant who put his saintliness, his humanity, his goodness and his meekness at the service of the Church”. (see Fides 25/05/2015)
