AMERICA/HAITI - 5 million Haitians vote in the midst of delays and clashes

Monday, 10 August 2015

Port au Prince (Agenzia Fides) - More than 5 million Haitians went to vote yesterday, Sunday, August 9, to elect their legislators.
The beginning of the vote, unfortunately, started off with delays, confusion and occasional clashes.
The legislative elections were postponed for nearly four years because of a political confrontation between the government and the opposition. Yesterday was considered a crucial test of the national electoral system before the vote for presidency in October.
To ensure the safety of members of the apparatus on this election day, 9,000 police officers in Haiti were mobilized, and over 41,000 temporary employees were called.
However, local media have reported the closing of the polling stations in the capital and elsewhere in the country, including the western town of Jeremie and numerous arrests of people accused of voting more than once. Observers from different political parties complained of not having had access to polling stations. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 10/08/2015)
