Friday, 7 August 2015

Kabul (Agenzia Fides) - The ongoing armed conflict in Afghanistan for almost 14 years recorded a 1% increase of victims in the first half of 2015, 4921 deaths or injuries among civilians, compared to the same period in 2014. However, the percentage of deaths among women increased by 23% and that of children by 13%. According to the Human Rights Unit of the United Nations Aid Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), the terrible increase in casualties among women and children is due to the guerrillas, in addition UNAMA attributed 70% of deaths among civilians to the insurgent forces. The United Nations is not able to verify if the Taliban are using civilians as human shields, but a large number of victims have been shot dead by pro-government troops during shootings in residential areas. Since the withdrawal of US and international troops from the Country, Afghanistan security forces are fighting alone against the Taliban who continue to intensify their attacks, moving from south and east to the north and by joining other insurgent groups. According to reports from some Afghan officials, also other insurgents have joined the war against Kabul, such as the racial militia Islamic State, which controls a third of Syria and Iraq with a small but growing presence in Afghanistan.
