AMERICA/VENEZUELA - National meeting among the indigenous communities for the protection of human rights

Caracas (Agenzia Fides) - Villages and indigenous communities of Venezuela will meet during a national meeting in the Kumarakapay community, Gran Sabana municipality, in Bolivar State, with the aim of unifying criteria on the proposals that the indigenous population will make at the National Plan for Human rights. According to a local press, the initiative, which is part of the International Day of Indigenous Peoples, will bring together the spokesmen of the indigenous organizations and organized popular forces, who will present the conclusions of each regional meeting carried out in the States with indigenous population, together with representatives of the National Council of Human Rights. As a prelude to this initiative, the Itoy Ponkon community, municipality of Heres, discussed the key points of the National Plan for Human Rights with representatives and spokesmen of the Arawako, Karina, Shiriana, Pemón, Yekuana Akawaio people, who will work to defend fundamental rights of Venezuelans. The Plan, among other things, wants to build an emancipated culture, the strengthening of institutions for the safeguard and the active participation of the people in power to the full enjoyment of human rights and good living. In addition, it provides for the interaction with the systems and the international organizations of human rights, as well as increased attention to the same laws, in the politics and activities of the Venezuelan State.
