Sirte (Agenzia Fides) - Three Christians - a Ghanaian, a Nigerian and a Coptic Egyptian – have been kidnapped in Libya by a jihadist group linked to the Islamic State (Daesh). The kidnapping dates back to 11 July, but was confirmed yesterday, Sunday, July 19, by Mohammed Hijazi, military spokesman of the Libyan government currently in Tobruk and recognized by the international community.
The seizure took place in the area of Nufliyah, south of Sirte, in an area considered one of the strongholds of jihadist groups. The jihadist group has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping on social media by posting photos of identity documents of the three kidnapped, without giving further details.
According to Egyptian sources consulted by Agenzia Fides, there are ongoing efforts to investigate the possibility of obtaining the release of the hostages by paying ransom.
Yesterday evening, July 19, four Italians were kidnapped in Mellitah. We are talking about four technicians, employees of an Italian company working in North African oil facilities. At the moment there is no news on the nature of the kidnapping. (GV) (Agenzia Fides 20/07/2015)
