AMERICA/PARAGUAY - "Why are we so inhuman towards each other?" Asks Mgr. Gimenez denouncing violence

Monday, 20 July 2015

Caacupé (Agenzia Fides) - The Bishop of Caacupé, His Exc. Mgr. Catalino Claudio Giménez Medina, complained about the wave of violence that hit the north of the country, where in less than a week five policemen were killed. "We all feel deeply disappointed that there is such inhuman behaviour among Paraguayans", said the Bishop who dedicated his homily during the Sunday Mass at the Shrine of Caacupé, to the two bombings in San Pedro and Amambay, on Sunday 12 and Friday 17 July, which resulted in the violent deaths of five policemen.
According to information sent to Fides, after quoting the statement of the Episcopal Conference that condemns these killings, expressing "rejection, pain and indignation", Mgr. Giménez said in his homily that "this longstanding hostility, full of hatred, expresses total contempt for life" and deplored the attitude of the criminals, who "eliminate the enemy with absolute cruelty".
In front of these criminal acts, "we need to stop and seriously re-think about what is happening to us as a Church and as a country. What is happening among us?" asked the Bishop again. The murderers in the north are part of those "wandering aimlessly, as desperate people" he said.
According to data collected by Fides, the north of Paraguay is under siege by the EPP (People's Army Paraguayo) which has begun to attack and kill policemen again with extreme cruelty. The local press highlights the presence of narco-terrorism in the area and the growth of acts of armed violence. Since 2013, 29 have been killed in this area, including policemen and soldiers.
