AMERICA/ARGENTINA - Nearly 30 percent of Argentines live in a situation of poverty

Wednesday, 15 July 2015

Buenos Aires (Agenzia Fides) - 28.7 percent of Argentines live in poverty and 2 million people are below the level of poverty: these are the findings of the last report of the Argentine Social Debt Observatory, ODSA, of the Catholic University of Argentina, UCA, which will be officially presented today.
The Coordinator of ODSA, Agustín Salvia, explained that "the percentage of poverty has not stopped since 2011, when the lowest level of poverty was recorded, mainly due to inflation and the lack of jobs, despite the fact that almost 30 percent of Argentine families are part of a social program". In order to develop this year's report, says Aica, three types poverty and destitution were analyzed: one was direct, related to food and unmet basic needs, another was indirect, linked to a minimum of well-being for economic revenue and a third was multidimensional, combining both methods from a rights point of view.
In the introduction to the report, the Rector of UCA, Mgr. Victor Manuel Fernandez, said that figures represent "a challenge for any government, national or local, present or future, of any political connotation". (SL) (Agenzia Fides 15/07/2015)
