AMERICA/NICARAGUA - Two children and a woman killed by mistake by the police; Mgr. Baez calls for justice

Tuesday, 14 July 2015

Managua (Agenzia Fides) - The Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Managua, His Exc. Mgr. Silvio Baez, calls for justice for two children and a woman, killed by the police in an operation against drug traffickers, and for the other two children who were slightly injured. In a brief note sent to Fides, the Bishop asks to "restore justice, so that violence and impunity do not prevail in the society".
According to data collected by Fides, the incident occurred on the evening of Saturday, July 11, along a rural road, east of Managua. According to the police’s version, the agents thought the family of seven members, four of them children, were a group of drug traffickers. Fourteen police officers involved in anti-drug operations were arrested and remain available for further investigation.
Mgr. Baez believes that the police should "reflect" on what happened: "The police should reflect on the way they operate, the protocol regarding the use of weapons, respect for human rights, for citizens and for the law. The most serious thing is that this is not an isolated case. There are many careless acts the police carry out", said the Bishop. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 14/07/2015)
