AFRICA/BURUNDI - More and more weapons circulate even among the opposition, a very worrying situation

Thursday, 2 July 2015

Bujumbura (Agenzia Fides) - "The number of victims in yesterday’s clashes is higher than reported by official sources, that speak of 6 dead", say local sources to Agenzia Fides from Bujumbura, capital of Burundi, where yesterday, 1 July, there were clashes between the police and some opponents of President Pierre Nkurunziza. "We know now that weapons are in the hands of the militia of the President but also in the hands of the opposition, who react by shooting when the police try to conduct searches in their neighborhoods", say our sources, who for security reasons remain anonymous. "The situation is therefore increasingly more and more dangerous. In Bujumbura there are Kalishnikov weapons and machine guns. Unfortunately we live in a region where it is easy to obtain weapons of war: think of the rebels in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo who have numerous arsenals". (L.M.)
