ASIA/IRAQ - An international conference in Erbil to found the "League of the Chaldeans"

Wednesday, 1 July 2015

Erbil (Agenzia Fides) - The International Conference of the founding of the "League of the Chaldeans", an organization strongly backed by Chaldean Patriarch Raphael Louis I as a tool to address the political and social problems involving the Chaldean communities throughout the world begins today in Erbil, and lasts until July 3. The founding Conference, in addition to the Patriarch, will be attended by representatives of the Chaldean communities from around the world, along with the Chaldean Bishops of Iraq and other Chaldean Bishops from abroad, such as the Syrian Jesuit Antoine Audo, Chaldean Bishop of Aleppo. On the agenda, the final approval of the regulations of the association and the creation of internal bodies. At the end of the Conference a final declaration to summarize the aims and areas of action of the new organization will be issued.
The aim of the association is mainly to involve professionals, intellectuals and experts competent in the various disciplines to represent in a coordinated and organic manner the instances of the Chaldean community in civil society, at a local and international level. In such a delicate moment like this, when the same Iraqi national unity is questioned by centrifugal forces of all kinds, the association aims to consolidate the foundations of coexistence and at the same time defend the rights of the Chaldeans, placing itself as "pressure instrument" on decision-making processes that affect the life of society. The new organization will be able to participate with their representatives in international forums. The funding will come only from private donations and from the collection of registration fees.
It was Chaldean Patriarch Raphael I Louis in February 2014 who launched the project of an association as a mechanism to facilitate the contribution of the Chaldeans to civil society and to help Iraq to overcome the excesses of sectarianism and ethnicity (see Fides 14/02/2014).
