Hong Kong (Fides Service) - Recently Bishop Joseph Zen of Hong Kong presided the funeral of Franciscan Father Antonius Lee who will be for ever remembered for his contribution towards producing a Chinese version of the Bible.
According to Kong Ko Bao Hong Kong diocesan bulletin, hundreds attended the funeral presided by the Bishop on 23 December. Father Lee died at the age of 87. Much of his life had been devoted to study and translation of the Bible. In the Chinese world of biblical studies the Studium Biblicum run by the Franciscans is the most authoritative school. The institute’s Chinese version of the Bible published in 1968 is still the most widely used among Chinese speaking. Father Antonius Lee, also part of the team of translators and writers who composed a Biblical Dictionary in Chinese (1975), was for many years director of the Studium Biblicum, Franciscan provincial Superior and Chancellor of St. Bonaventura College.
