Tuesday, 23 June 2015

Juba (Agenzia Fides) - "It is necessary that the international community intervenes forcefully to stop the fratricidal war between the supporters of President Salava Kiir and former Vice President Riek Machar", says, in a statement sent to Agenzia Fides, Fr. Mark Opere Omol, spokesman for the diocese of Torit in South Sudan, in the grip since December 2013 of a catastrophic civil war. "The UN estimates that about 4 million and 600 thousand people are at risk of starvation. There is need for emergency aid to help the displaced people in various parts of the Country". "The President and former Vice President have to reach a compromise and sign the peace agreement within a short period of time if they really have at heart the good of the Country", concludes Fr. Omol, who launches an appeal to the few humanitarian organizations that have remained in South Sudan not to leave the country. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 23/06/2015)
