AMERICA/PARAGUAY – Urgent need to eradicate child labor, which is dangerous and harmful to physical and mental development

Thursday, 18 June 2015

Montevideo (Agenzia Fides) - According to official figures, approximately 436,000 children and adolescents between 5 and 17 years of age in Paraguay are exploited for different types of jobs out of a total population of nearly 7 million people. 96% of them carry out hazardous jobs. In addition, 211,000 children between 5 and 13 years of age work despite the fact that the minimum age provided for in the Code of Children and Adolescents is 14.
The International Labour Organization (ILO) considers the urgency to eradicate any kind of child labor that 'deprives children of their childhood, their dignity and is negative for their physical and mental development'. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 18/06/2015)
