AFRICA/DR CONGO - "One votes on the basis of the existing electoral rolls" says the archdiocese of Kisangani

Wednesday, 17 June 2015

Kinshasa (Agenzia Fides) - Consultations between institutions, civil society and religious leaders continue with regards to the upcoming elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo, at a central level led by President Joseph Kabila, and at a provincial level under the aegis of several governors.
In Kisangani, capital of the Eastern province, the governor met with a delegation of the local Archdiocese, as well as representatives of other religious denominations.
"We agree with an inclusive dialogue respectful of the law. It is a good thing to discuss the electoral lists, the inclusion of young people. But will all this be possible taking the electoral calendar into account? In the given time it will be difficult. We hope that the elections are conducted by taking into account the electoral lists established before", said Don Jacques Colombe, who was part of the delegation of the Catholic Church.
One of the issues to be addressed is the need to balance the busy schedule election (see Fides 21/2/2015) with the proposal made by the Presidency to update the electoral rolls. A fact that, according to the opposition, could hide the desire to postpone the elections, allowing Kabila to stay in power even after the expiry of his term in 2016.
