AMERICA/MEXICO - Bishop of Mazatlan’s appeal after the violence perpetrated during the weekend

Monday, 15 June 2015

Sinaloa (Agenzia Fides) - The Bishop of Mazatlan (Sinaloa, Mexico), His Exc. Mgr. Mario Espinosa Contreras in the face of the climate of violence in recent days, which resulted in the murder of a woman and the disappearance of two people on Friday, 12 June, and the massacre of five young people in a car with firearms on Saturday 13, strongly deplored these criminal acts which involve this whole area of the country. After the celebration of Sunday Mass, the Bishop said he was very worried by the fact that every day there is a crime, violence, and called for calm, tolerance and harmony, asking for God's help. Mgr. Espinosa Contreras also urged the authorities to be vigilant, and have to keep away from corruption and complicity.
Last weekend particularly violent attacks occured in Mexico, with at least 12 deaths in five states. Six murders in Sinaloa and that of a public official in Chihuahua. Sinaloa especially in these days is recalling June 13, 2010, when there were 37 murders in one day. Some of the terrible incidents in these days are the result of vengeance or of struggles for the division of the territory by gangs of drug traffickers, but others, like the case of the murdered woman, have no immediate explanations.
