AFRICA/BURUNDI - Three people killed in Bujumbura, but for the President the demonstrations have now finished

Thursday, 11 June 2015

Bujumbura (Agenzia Fides) - "Last night the police killed three people, a woman and two children, in a neighborhood in Bujumbura, where so far there had been no demonstrations" refer local sources from the Burundian capital to Agenzia Fides. "Today there have been no demonstrations in Bujumbura, while yesterday there were some in neighborhoods of the capital.
In recent days in some provinces of the Country protesters took to the streets, particularly in the province of Makamba and Bururi", say our sources.
President Pierre Nkurunziza, who sparked a wave of protest after having announced his intention to present himself for a third term, in violation of the Constitution, said that the demonstrations have now finished. Most independent radio stations and opposition are silent after their offices were destroyed by police and militiamen linked to the President’s party (see Fides 16/05/2015).
The local and parliamentary elections are now scheduled on June 29 and the presidential election on July 15. These dates, however, are questioned by the opposition and civil society who were not consulted. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 11/06/2015)
