AMERICA/VENEZUELA - The Church calls on the authorities to respond to the students on hunger strike

Caracas (Agenzia Fides) - The Secretary General of the Venezuelan Episcopal Conference, Father Victor Hugo Basabe, called on the competent authorities to respond to the situation of students and opposition leaders who are on hunger strike to demand the release of their colleagues, arrested in connection with anti-government protests in the first half of 2014 (see Fides 30/05/2015). Father Basabe, speaking to a local radio station, said that the Episcopal Conference discussed the current state of so-called "political prisoners" and deep concern was expressed about the deteriorating situation. Yesterday, reports another note sent to Fides, Cardinal Jorge Urosa Savino, Archbishop of Caracas, visited the 17 students on hunger strike, who have confirmed the intention to continue the strike.
