AFRICA/NIGERIA - "Let us pray for the new President" says the President of the Episcopal Conference

Monday, 1 June 2015

Abuja (Agenzia Fides) - "President Buhari said that he belongs to everybody and belongs to nobody. I think what he is trying to say is that he will not be a sectional leader", said His Exc. Mgr. Ignatius Ayau Kaigama, Archbishop of Jos and President of the Episcopal Conference of Nigeria, during a mass at the erection of St Michael’s Pastoral Area Pwomol-Heipang to the status of a parish. "This is quite positive and we must continue to pray for him to actualise his vision for the country", added Mgr. Kaigama, who stressed that Nigeria was in dire need of peace and other needs like water, roads and electricity.
Buhari was appointed President of Nigeria, on May 29, after winning the elections on March 28, defeating outgoing Head of State, Goodluck Jonathan.
The President of the Episcopal Conference of Nigeria thanked Jonathan "for not causing trouble" in recognizing the victory of the opponent, otherwise "Nigeria would not have been enjoying the peace that is currently being experienced". Mgr. Kaigama refers to the fact that, apart from the areas in the northeast devastated by the rebellion of Boko Haram, the rest of the country lives in a situation of relative calm, which would have been deeply disturbed if the outcome of the vote had been contested.
