Friday, 29 May 2015

Hong Kong (Agenzia Fides) - "The Church in Asia: from conversion to evangelization" was the theme of the first Congress of lay missionaries in Asia organized by the Association of Lay Catholics in Hong Kong as part of the celebrations for the 25th anniversary of the foundation of the Association.
According to information gathered by Agenzia Fides, fifty representatives of lay missionaries from several Asian countries (Cambodia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia. Philippines etc ...) and also of missionaries of other continents, gathered in Hong Kong from May 22 to 25 to share the Lord's call and the difficulties they encounter in their mission.
Cardinal John Tong, Bishop of Hong Kong, presided at the solemn Eucharist closing of the Congress, May 25, at the Cathedral of Hong Kong. In his homily he encouraged the missionaries to prepare themselves for their service, "to know their faith, deepen the communion of the community, participate in charity work" in order to "build peace in society". He also stressed the importance of lay missionaries in the mission of evangelization, following the example of St. Francis Xavier. The participants expressed the hope that this meeting can be repeated. (NZ) (Agenzia Fides 29/05/2015)
