AFRICA/MADAGASCAR - The President denies the motion for dismissal, the Bishops denounce "the culture of corruption"

Antananarivo (Agenzia Fides) - Malagasy President Hery Rajaonarimampianina said he will not resign and challenged the dismissal of the motion passed by Parliament (see Fides 27/05/2015). In a televised message to the nation, Rajaonarimampianina said that some deputies voted against him because "he did not grant them free off-road vehicles".
The problem of corruption on the other hand had been denounced by the Bishops in their message on May 13, sent to Agenzia Fides, where they expressed the existence of "a culture of corruption." The Bishops also denounced electoral deceptions ("one corrupts the choice of citizens taking advantage of their innocence, their ignorance, their poverty"), and the use in the political struggle, of illegal files often based on lies, to put in prison, "those who try to resist, proud of their freedom".
The message also claims that there are "ill-intentioned people who seek to disturb the minds of the population", spreading "the idea of tribalism, of class struggle, not to mention an excessive claim of regional pride or lineage". "We must never forget that we form one and only nation: the Malagasy nation" warn the Bishops.
The Bishops finally complain that corruption, lack of justice and public services (primarily those of health care), the proliferation of sophisticated weapons, means that the population is left prey to criminal networks, healers and "popular courts".
The authority of the State is no longer visible. In order for people to defend themselves and defend their property sanction agreements among villagers which involve various excesses and ambiguities in their execution". (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 28/05/2015)
