AMERICA/COLOMBIA - "Stop deaths! An agreement has to be reached as soon as possible", asks Cardinal Salazar Gómez

Tuesday, 26 May 2015

Bogota (Agenzia Fides) - The Archbishop of Bogota, Cardinal Rubén Salazar Gómez, speaking to the local press reiterated that war must end and an agreement between the government and the FARC has to be reached as soon as possible. As demonstrated by the note sent to Fides, the Cardinal explicitly said: "Enough! No more deaths! Conflict must end".
The delegations of the Colombian government and the FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) resumed peace talks in Havana, yesterday, Monday, May 25, after several days of tension. On May 22, in fact the guerrillas had taken the decision to suspend the ceasefire in force since December 2014 after 26 of its fighters had been killed in an offensive by the Colombian army. Five other guerrillas were killed in a new raid this weekend.
According to data collected by Fides a member of the delegation of the FARC, Pablo Catatumbo, said: "No doubt last week’s events are a step back in the progress made so far at the negotiating table. This is the wrong path, and it is obvious that peace will never be achieved if conflict continues". Over the weekend the Colombian army mobilized in view of a possible resumption of the conflict.
